Ahh...that would have to be my original, long-running character Veldrin. Of all the characters currently in residence, he's the one who's been there the longest (since December 2002), although he HAS changed a lot in that time. If I showed you the first version of him from '02 you wouldn't really think it was the same guy...
▶ What colour do you often use?
Grey. I use it excessively, given that the bulk of my characters are actually black and white.
▶ Any colour you are bad at using?
White. I need to use it quite a lot, but it's a bit of a bitch to get shading right on white without it all going a sort of dirty grey.
▶ When drawing people, where do you start?
The head. I'll draw the outline of a head, then a stick-figure skeleton for the body.
▶ What is a character only your eraser will love?
Only my eraser? Alas, Koel (a bad guy from an earlier story of mine) only got drawn once, and that picture was terrible.
▶ Which of your works took the longest time?
Four Shades of Badassitude [link] took an immensely long time.
▶ What techniques do you use when you want to improve in drawing?
Practice, and working from references.
▶ What do you think of the art of the person who gave you this picturememe?
I just found this meme through an internet trawl.
▶ Art tools/media you are good at?
Digital colouring, pencil sketches. I also remember really getting along well with oil paints, but I can't afford them or canvases anymore.
▶ Art tools/media you are bad at?
Oil pastels. Those things are the spawn of Satan. >.<
▶ What do you think about your own art?
Needs improvement, but it's nowhere near as shite as it was.
▶ Do you consult magazines for your drawings?
I've found magazines a pretty good source of pictures for pose and facial structure reference. I haven't bought many art magazines though.
▶ What do you like about your art?
My characters each look like individuals with their own different faces, body shapes, etc.
▶ What habits do you have while drawing?
Kneeling on my chair instead of sitting which makes my legs go to sleep.
▶ How frequently do you draw?
Less often than I'd like to due to university work and a busy life, but I like to produce at least a few drawings a month.
▶ What do you do when you have artist's block?
Go looking for stock photos that might be fun to draw from, as some kind of inspiration.
▶ What must you have when you draw?
Pencil, paper, and preferably not complete silence.
▶ Do you have a lot of stray lines (messy lineart)?
Yes, it's very messy. I rub out and change a lot.
▶ What is drawing to you?
A way of getting the contents of my head out into the world so people can see them.
▶ Your goal from now on
Improve.
▶ Artists you've had influence from?
▶ Artists you like?
Oh geez, you ask a big question!
▶ Which is easier to draw, humans or animals?
Humans. I was awesome at drawing animals but terrible at people as a kid; when I started having art lessons at school when I was 12 I got more interested in human anatomy and faces and drawing people and less in drawing animals. Consequently, I spent more time drawing people and got good at it, and have mostly forgotten how to draw animals.
▶ Please tell us the title(s) of your own comic(s)
I don't have any comics at present but I want to do a graphic-novel version of my novel Underground Dystopia sometime after I graduate when I have more time.
▶ Show us an old picture
This is from around Christmas 2003 [link] of some character from a story I was writing when I was a teenager.
▶ What is the charm-point of your art?
I'm not even sure what a charm-point is really. So I'm gonna be silly and say it's Veldrin's chin.
▶ What is the first thing you would draw if we're talking about fantasy?
I'd probably draw one of the characters from my novel. Of course, my novel being what it is it wouldn't be conventional/high fantasy, but hey. It's still fantasy.
▶ Please draw your most beloved character
Here he is, in handy anatomical drawing form! [link]
▶ When thinking of characters is it mostly female? male? or androgynous/no sex?
Most of my characters are male, and fairly manly ones at that; for some reason I find male characters not only easier to draw (heh, men are square, it's easy) but easier to write and RP too. That's not to say I don't have a number of significant female characters, but the ones who are are usually a little on the androgynous side in either personality or physical appearance (or sometimes both); uber-feminine girly girls just don't appeal to me as characters much.
▶ What did you draw yesterday?
Alas, I didn't.
▶ What is the funnest part to draw?
The faces. It's a character's face that makes him unique.
▶ What part of other people's drawings do you notice first?
The level of detail. I'm a sucker for it.
▶ Regarding backgrounds, what is your method of making it easier to draw?
'Blurry' backgrounds like in this picture. [link]
▶ What colour coordinations do you like?
Lots of greys, browns, rusty and sludgy colours...all the colours of the dystopian future rainbow...
▶ What character did you last draw?
Melissa, but it's not on DA yet.
▶ Does your style change easily?
It grows and adapts slowly the more I draw.
▶ What part of drawing do you pay most attention to?
The characters' faces. While I don't rate myself very highly as an artist I take a lot of pride in all of my characters having unique faces, just like real people do, so I put a LOT of effort into getting each character's face just right.
▶ How do you feel about drawing H pictures?
H pictures? What is that anyway?
▶ Do you like criticism from others?
I like it if it's constructive criticism giving me suggestions on how to do things better. I can't stand pointless fanboy "WAH! UR ELVES AREN'T JUST LIKE IN LOTR/FORGOTTEN REALMS!!!!!!!!!!! SO UR AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!" criticism though, or complaints that my male characters aren't cute cookie-cutter bishonen.
▶ how many people do you normally draw per artwork?
Usually one or two, but I can do group pictures with up to 11 people in.
